June is celebrated as Pride Month across the world. Known for pride walks, and events surrounding awareness on LGBTQ, it is also the time to revisit some of the Tamil films which had an empathetic portrayal of the community. Here are five Tamil films which can be streamed, that not only bring out queer stories with dignity and delight, but also with utmost authenticity.

Neela Nira Sooriyan is a 2024 Tamil drama film written, directed, and headlined by Samyuktha Vijayan. The film follows Aravind, a high school physics teacher, and the journey as he transitions into Bhanu, and continues to work at the same school. The film poignantly and significantly talks about the protagonist’s strength and resilience in confronting societal prejudice and institutional apathy. Samyuktha's portrayal is lauded for its restraint and authenticity, drawing from personal experience. Neela Nira Sooriyan stands as a significant contribution to Tamil queer cinema. It also stars Kitty Krishnamoorthy, Gajaraj, Geetha Kailasam, and others.

Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai is a 2025 Tamil romance drama directed by Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan. The film centers around a girl who comes out to her mother while introducing her girlfriend. The film, which talks about same-sex relationships, explores the dynamic complexities about how Indian households which are termed progressive are yet to come in terms of understanding with accepting their children’s sexuality. The narrative unfolds within a single day, exploring themes of love, identity, and societal norms. It stars Lijomol Jose, Anusha, Rohini Molleti, Vineeth and others.

Super Deluxe is a hyperlink drama film which is directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja. Taking place in a day, the film follows different characters problems, with one of them including that of a transwoman Shilpa who reunites with her young son she had with her former wife. Played by Vijay Sethupathi, the actor’s performance won much accolades and appreciation, including National Film Award. Super Deluxe is still celebrated for its unflinching portrayal of complex characters and its commentary on contemporary society.

Goa is perhaps the first time in modern day Tamil cinema to portray same-sex relationship between two men, without having to milk it out. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the film explores three men who elope from their village and end up in Goa. They befriend a gay couple who run local business in the tourist city. Aravind Akash and Sampath portray the couple, while the rest of cast includes Vaibhav, Jai, Premgi, Sneha and others.

Peranbu – Prime Video

Peranbu is a 2018 Tamil drama film written and directed by Ram. The film features Mammootty as single father of a young girl with cerebral palsy. As the film explores the dynamic complexities of the duo, their lives are met with different characters on the way, one of them being a compassionate transwoman who eventually becomes a family to the father and daughter. Anjali Ameer plays the role of Meera, the transwoman, who is portrayed with much empathy and humanity, who eventually ends up marrying the protagonist and end up shattering many regressive beliefs in the society.
