But there are some that are absolutely must-watches and, as luck has it, are also available on major OTT platforms to watch. On the late Rebel Star’s birth anniversary, here are 5 Ambareesh films that we think should be seen.


The 1972 Puttanna Kanagal directorial Naagarahavu was Ambareesh’s launchpad. He played the eve-teaser Jaleela in the film, which included his famous line, “Bulbul Mathadkilwa”. A commercial success, Naagarahavu was a major milestone in the careers of leading man Vishnuvardhan, as well as Ambareesh.

New Delhi

The Kannada remake of the Malayalam hit New Delhi had Ambareesh in the role of a journalist and his quest for revenge against two politicians. The actor was paired with his wife Sumalatha in the film directed by Joshiy.

Director Rajendra Singh Babu’s 1981 action thriller film had Ambareesh in a double role, as a honest police officer as well as a dreaded gangster. A massive commercial success, Antha won multiple awards at the Karnataka State Film Awards, including a Special Jury Award for the Rebel Star.
