The 1972 Puttanna Kanagal directorial Naagarahavu was Ambareesh’s launchpad. He played the eve-teaser Jaleela in the film, which included his famous line, “Bulbul Mathadkilwa”. A commercial success, Naagarahavu was a major milestone in the careers of leading man Vishnuvardhan, as well as Ambareesh.

The Kannada remake of the Malayalam hit New Delhi had Ambareesh in the role of a journalist and his quest for revenge against two politicians. The actor was paired with his wife Sumalatha in the film directed by Joshiy.
