When it comes to filmmakers who excel at their craft in Bollywood, Subhash Ghai deserves a special mention. There was an era where this filmmaker made soft melodramatic films, almost always themed around romance in its raw form. Other times, he tapped into dramatic action movies which left an impact. With him, it isnalways about the art, and his movies on Zee5 (can be streamed via OTTplay Premium) are proof of the same.

Here's taking a look at some of Subhash Ghai's best works...

Pardes

A soft and romantic Shah Rukh Khan longing for love, singing Zara Tasveer Se Tu Nikal Ke Saamne Aa, is something that a filmmaker like Ghai could only bring forth. The lover who could never express his love but kept waiting and longing for his woman, now in a toxic marriage, is a pain that you can feel through the screen. It was only possible with a film like Pardes, and the fact that the concept holds strong and relevant even today, is what makes this one a true gem of a film.

Taal

Like the name suggests, Taal is a musical and it centres around a dancer, Mansi (played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). Akshaye Khanna's Manav has a chance meeting with her, which eventually leads to a love story. Owing to the difference in their socio-economic status, his father not only rejects Mansi but also insults her family. Almost as if fate helps her seek revenge, Mansi becomes a star right after meeting Vikrant Kapoor (Anil Kapoor). They fall in love but it is on their wedding day that realization dawns - she is still in love with Manav. And thus, we find a happy ending for the couple.

Yaadein

Another tragic love story between Hrithik Roshan's Ronit Malhotra and Kareena Kapoor Khan's Isha Singh Puri, Yaadein is the story of past trauma playing a crucial role in present decision-making (and why it shouldn't). Yaadein, like most Ghai-themed films, is about love and longing.

Ram Lakhan

Before shifting his focus to love and longing, Subhash Ghai made an iconic movie on brotherhood. This one, we know as Ram Lakhan, featuring Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff in the lead roles. The film is about brothers who meet by chance and the thirst for justice brings them closer. Their only aim now is to find who killed their father.

Khal Nayak

A movie which became the standard for a cop and criminal story, Khal Nayak has a special place in Indian cinema. Jackie Shroff plays Inspector Ram, who caught notorious criminal Ballu (Sanjay Dutt) after various attempts. On learning so, Ram's fiancé Ganga (Madhuri Dixit) decides to help recapture Ballu, only for the criminal to develop feelings for her.

Karma

Before Ram Lakhan, we had Karma. The Subhash Ghai directorial also featured Naseeruddin Shah and superstar Dilip Kumar. Vishwa Pratap Singh (Kumar) picks three death row prisoners and gives them a chance for reform. They, of course, nab it with both their hands.
