The name Kamal Haasan needs no introduction. A masterful storyteller and an iconic name in Indian cinema, the multi-faceted artiste has done it all. We do understand that Kamal Haasan’s sprawling career cannot be summarized into a list, but we have taken films from various stages of his lives and he had given the classic Kamal Haasan twist to it.
Michael Madana Kama Rajan is a 1990 Tamil comedy film directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao and written by Kamal Haasan. In the film, Kamal Haasan plays four different characters as mentioned in the title. The story revolves around quadruplets who were separated at birth and raised by different families who come from different religions, occupations and walks of life. However, it so happens that all four of them cross paths as adults, which results in a clever screenplay that blends comedy, drama and emotions. Michael Madana Kama Rajan features a star ensemble including Urvashi, Khusboo, Rupini, Manorama, Delhi Ganesh, Nassar, Vennira Aadai Moorthy, Nagesh, Santhana Bharathi and RS Shivaji.
Uttama Villain is a 2015 Tamil drama film directed by Ramesh Aravind and written by Kamal Haasan, who also plays the lead role. The story is about a superstar who is diagnosed with terminal illness and decides to make his life meaningful by making his last film. Exploring the themes of fame, legacy and personal redemption, the film stars Jayaram, Andrea Jeremiah, Pooja Kumar, Nassar, Parvathy Thiruvothu and Urvashi.
Dasavathaaram is a 2008 Tamil science fiction thriller directed by KS Ravikumar and written by Kamal Haasan. Once again showing his penchant for playing different roles and taking up challenges, Kamal Haasan plays 10 different roles, that varies through appearance, gender and background. Starting from the 12th Century when an ardent Lord Vishnu devotee is drowned into the sea, the film talks about the butterfly effect connecting to viral issue that is threatening the modern-day world. In the film, Kamal Haasan plays a scientist, a Japanese martial artist, a Sikh singer, an orthodox grandmother, a US national, a Vishnu devotee, an activist, a cop, US president George Bush, and a tailor with gigantism. Made on a massive scale, the film also stars Asin in dual roles, Jaya Prada, Mallika Sherawat, Nagesh, and others.
Sigappu Rojakkal is a 1978 Tamil psychological thriller directed by Bharathiraja, starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in the lead roles. The film centers on a wealthy, charming man who seems to be a charming man outside, but in reality is a psychopathic killer targeting women, all because of his traumatic past shaped by women with questionable traits. But when he falls for a woman who really care for him, would he let himself to be redeemed or make her as victim as well forms the story.
Nayakan is a 1987 Tamil gangster drama directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan in one of his iconic performances, as Sakthivel Naicker. Loosely based on the life of Mumbai underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar, the film follows Velu Naicker, a Tamil boy who becomes a powerful don after facing injustice, at Mumbai. It explores themes of justice, morality, and the personal cost of violence. Kamal Haasan’s portrayal earned him a National Award. With Ilaiyaraaja’s music, PC Sreeram’s cinematography, Nayakan is considered a masterpiece of Indian cinema. It also stars Nasser, Nizhalgal Ravi, Saranya Ponvannan and others.
