Sanam Teri Kasam is back in the news, this time because Harshvardhan Rane has condemned Mawra Hocane from being a part of the film's sequel. Sanam Teri Kasam 2, as we know, has been in the making ever since its theatrical re-release caused an uproar. Every heartbroken person just couldn't get enough. While the movie is one of the classics, there are others giving it tough competition.
Just like Sanam Teri Kasam, Tere Naam has a fanbase that is crazy about the movie. Salman Khan's character Radhe is what most Indian 'sigma boys' relate to. After seeing the love of his life being married to someone else, Radhe breaks down to the point where he gets schizophrenia. It comes to the point where he cannot recognize himself or distinguish between reality and delusion, thus leading to one of the saddest endings in a 'love story (that was mostly about the boy stalking the girl till she says yes).'
A classic tale often retold is that of Devdas. This is a childhood love story between Paro and Dev Babu. She loves, longs and waits for him with all her heart while he moves out of India for studies. Dev comes back a changed man. He tortures her emotionally but blinded by love, Paro ignores it all. One day, things turn too real, since Paro seeks stability and Dev is too caught up drowning in sorrow to get up and take charge. He even meets Chandramukhi to divert his attention from Paro, but instead, Dev realizes that he, too, is in love with Paro. During his last moments, Dev goes to a now-married Paro who cannot even see her childhood love before his final moments. Truly, a tragic love story.
A musician seeks inspiration to make music. He gets to know heartbreak is one of the ways an artist can feel emotions unlike any other. At that point, Jordan (Ranbir Kapoor) meets Heer (Nargis Fakhri). She hates him, but he keeps confessing his love to her. Heer keeps pushing Jordan away, but he always comes back. Jordan never left, even after Heer got married. She finally gave in, and just when the couple born out of infidelity was getting their happy ending (Jordan got to know he might get to start a family with Heer), she dies a tragic death. Now, all that's left is a heartbroken musician who goes home to void and too much pain to handle.
Another childhood love story that begins with stalking, Raanjhanaa is about Kundan (Dhanush) falling in love with Zoya (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja) at first sight. He ignored every other woman and stayed loyal to Zoya, only for her to friendzone him and ditch Kundan for Akram aka Jasjeet Singh (Abhay Deol). The real tragedy begins when Kundan was too heartbroken to get out of coma after a major accident. He wished to, for his love Zoya paid him a visit, but considering his options, he chose to die in hopes of finding his Zoya in another life.
Do we even need to state out loud about this classic? If Hollywood has Romeo and Juliet, we have Heer-Ranjha and Laila-Majnu, to name a few. The stories are all woven from the same thread, and tragedy befalls upon them all. A love story ever-so-passionate ends in death over class and caste divide. Except our lovers decide to take matter into their own hands and choose death.
