British black comedy crime dramas were brought to global attention, thanks to the efforts of filmmakers Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn, who set the standards for the genre. .

The 1998 film, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, directed by Ritchie and produced by Vaughn, is a relatively low budget indie film that was well received by critics.

The heist film follows a group of friends and small-time con men who try to win a high-stakes card game with the help of their own card sharp and specialist, Eddie, played by Nick Moran. With half-million pounds at stake their plans go awry, because unbeknownst to them, the game has been rigged and they end up owing money to a gangster.

With the gangster’s enforcer on their tails to retrieve the cash, the four of them plan an elaborate heist to rob a group of men who themselves are planning to rob from cannabis dealers.

The film’s dark comedy, intriguing characters, and fast paced narrative make it an underrated cult classic. It featured the film debuts of former sports stalwarts Vinnie Jones, an ex-professional footballer, and Jason Statham, who was once part of the British national diving team. The film also established Statham as a future Hollywood star.
