Lokah Chapter 1 becomes third highest grossing Malayalam film in Karnataka

The box office rampage that is Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra is far from over. After two weeks in theatres across the globe, Lokah, has registered over Rs 210 crore in gross collections. The film’s collections outside of Kerala are expected to remain unchanged, despite new films like Mirai, for instance, in theatres. In Karnataka, where the film team chose to only release the Malayalam original version, Lokah has just become the third highest grossing movie in the language. According to trade tracking site sacnilk.com, on Day 14, Lokah Chapter 1 broke into double digit figures. After 15 days, it’s gross stood at Rs 10.4 cr in Karnataka, with another good weekend loading.

Lokah Chapter 1 is now only behind Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan (Rs 12.5 cr) and Manjummel Boys (Rs 14.7 cr). Conservative estimates predict that after its third weekend, the film will be tantalisingly close to eclipsing Empuraan’s record and moving to second place. Whether or not the film has the wherewithal to get past Manjummel Boys also remains to be seen.

There are big ticket Telugu films like Akhanda 2 and OG heading for theatres on September 25, but Lokah’s next major challenge is only likely to be when Kantara Chapter 1 releases. Rishab Shetty’s Kantara prequel will get a wide release on October 2, but that still gives the Dominic Arun directorial a little under 3 weeks to set a new record and become the highest grossing Malayalam film in the state.

Meanwhile, earlier on September 12, the makers confirmed that Tovino Thomas is Michael, a chathan, whose story it will be in the next edition of the franchise. Dominic reckons that he will need at least a year to get the screenplay of Chapter 2 in place, following which they will go on floors with it. Tovino has not yet had a film in the Rs 200 cr club, although he came close with the disaster movie 2018.
