The resounding success of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra , starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and directed by Dominic Arun, has all but guaranteed further sequels. The makers have already revealed plans for a five-movie franchise starring Tovino Thomas, Dulquer Salmaan, and possibly even Mammootty. As teased in the end-credit sequence, the next chapter is set to delve into the world of chaathans (goblins).

In the scene, Tovino’s chaathan is seen conversing with Vijay Menon’s character, who tells him about a group of archaeologists who vanished inside a cave. He also shows him a photograph of a man identical to the chaathan. To this, Tovino’s character replies, “It could be him or one of his 389 siblings.” The scene ends with a chilling tease: The goblins are coming.

Who does Tovino Thomas play?

There has been much speculation about Tovino’s role in Dominic Arun’s second outing with the actor after Tharangam. While it was clear that the Thallumaala star plays a chaathan, it is now confirmed that his character is none other than Vishnumaya chaathan.

This explains why he boldly declares “I am a God” to one of the cops at Michael’s Health Centre, where Chandra brings her human companions for help. According to mythology, Vishnumaya was born from the union of Shiva and Parvathi, who had disguised herself as a tribal woman named Koolivaka.

Another version of the legend says Koolivaka gave birth to several chaathans — the youngest and most mischievous being Vishnumaya, and the eldest and most hot-headed being Karimkutti chaathan. When the asura warrior Bhringasuran fell for Koolivaka, he waged war against her and her tribe. Vishnumaya, with Karimkutti by his side, fought the asura. During the battle, a drop of blood from Vishnumaya’s finger gave rise to 400 Kuttichaathans, 10 of whom sacrificed themselves by swallowing Bhringasuran’s thunderbolts.

The tale itself has two endings: in one, Karumkutti slays Bhringasuran with his chaathan kolu (magical stick), while in the other, Vishnumaya emerges supreme.

What to expect in Lokah Chapter 2?

The post-credit photograph showing Tovino in a shaggy look holding a stick strongly hints at Karumkutti chaathan. Interestingly, Tovino is no stranger to superhero franchises or multiple avatars in fantasy adventures — as seen in Minnal Murali and Ajayante Randam Moshanam, where he played three roles. One of them, Maniyan, even reminded audiences of the figure in the post-credit photo in Lokah Chapter 1.

Given that his character in Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra was portrayed as a trickster in this reimagined modern storytelling of characters deeply rooted in Kerala’s folklore by Dominic and his team, the sequel could see Tovino exploring multiple shades — perhaps even stepping into several avatars, if not all 390, when Lokah Chapter 2 unfolds.
