Kangana Ranaut is currently making headlines for playing the role of former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. She is seen in the role in her movie, Emergency. Vidya Balan was also supposed to play that role in a web series. However, that might just never happen.
In fact, Kangana could be part the reason why Vidya will never play Indira Gandhi on screen. A source told ETimes that the web series featuring Vidya as the controversial Indira Gandhi is not conducive in the current political climate. “With Kangana playing Mrs. Gandhi, it makes no sense for Vidya to go down that dangerous road,” the little birdie mentioned.
The web series featuring Vidya was announced three long years back. It was supposed to be produced by her husband Siddharth Roy Kapur. Vidya’s show was being adapted from Sagarika Ghose's critically acclaimed book on the former PM.
Vidya might just be another name who has refused to play the controversial Indira Gandhi on the big screen. Before her, even Manisha Koirala was approached to play the role in a movie.
The project was announced on Indira’s 85th birth anniversary. It was titled Indira Gandhi A Tryst With Destiny.
Manisha was so excited for the project that she even altered the shape of her nose to look the part. Unfortunately, though, that project is now on the backburner.
Even the queen of expressions Madhuri Dixit-Nene was approached to play Gandhi on the big screen. She was approached for the part back in 2009. However, nothing materialized even then.
Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, based on the period of Emergency in India and Indira Gandhi’s major role in that, has gone on floors. It is being directed as well as produced by Kangana. She is yet to share the update or release date on the film.
