In the re-releases era, yet another Bollywood classic is making its way to the big screen again. Yes, we are talking about Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera, which has a separate fanbase for every aspect, from the songs and performances of Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha to cinematography and the filmmaker's poetic direction. Lootera is set to hit theatres once again on March 7, 2025.

Inspired by O. Henry’s The Last Leaf

O. Henry's 1907 short tale The Last Leaf serves as the inspiration for the second half of the 2013 period romantic drama Lootera. After the highly praised Udaan (2010), this is Motwane's second feature film.

The plot revolves around a young con artist (Ranveer Singh) who poses as an archaeologist and falls for the daughter (Sonakshi Sinha) of a Bengali zamindar. It takes place in the 1950s, around the time when India was just becoming independent, and it is set against the backdrop of the Zamindari Abolition Act.

Pakhi and Varun’s love and betrayal

In 1953, Pakhi, the daughter of aristocrats, falls in love with a visiting archaeologist; however, he keeps a secret that could lead to their separation. But he has a secret side life that she has no idea about, and it's threatening their relationship. As with The Last Leaf, the inspirational love story Lootera follows the lives of two people. Despite the tragedy, treachery, and eventual salvation it contains, it remains a compelling story.

The film was produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap, and Vikas Bahl. Amit Trivedi composed the music and background score, Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote the lyrics, and Mahendra J. Shetty shot the scenes.

Praised performances and commercial expectations

Sinha and Singh's performances in Lootera were highly praised when it was released, and the former's performance in particular was seen as a breakthrough for him.

Motwane claimed in a subsequent interview that nobody lost money on that film, despite widespread belief to the contrary. There were hopes for a Rs 30-crore weekend because it was going to be Ranveer's or Sonakshi's next film, but that didn't materialise.

Sonakshi Sinha’s transformation into a 1950s Bengali girl

Meanwhile, Sinha said in an interview with The Hindu that he plays a Bengali girl. Subarna, the film's designer, meticulously researched 1950s Bengali fashion, hairstyles, and cosmetics to ensure the outfit she wears is authentic. They have made an effort to imitate it. Like the women of that era, Motwane has kept her makeup minimal, using only kajal, kumkum, and a touch of laali on her lips. To this point, it has been Sinha's most challenging shooting experience. Everything from her appearance to her performance to the settings had to be based on a time period she was completely unfamiliar with.

On the other hand, Motwane was adamant that Ranveer blend James Dean's and Dev Anand's styles.

Where to watch Lootera

Meanwhile, Lootera is available to stream on Prime Video and JioHotstar.
