'Lost my onscreen virginity to you': Shefali Shah to Kirti Kulhari on their onscreen kiss in Human

Shefali Shah and Kirti Kulhari starrer Human started streaming on Disney+ Hotstar on Friday. The series features both the actors playing the roles of doctors and is set against the backdrop of the underbelly of the medical world. Major Spoilers Ahead - Human has Kirti playing a lesbian, and she shares an on-screen kiss with Shefali. During a recent interaction, the Pink actor spoke at length about the whole shooting process during the kiss sequence.

As Kirti told Hindustan Times, in the show, Shefali's hands are in contact with hers at times, and there is even a kissing sequence. As an actor, she was up for it but still found it unusual. Kirti further shared that she had never done anything like this before. It was still odd for her to develop that connection with a woman, to truly offer the expressions she would if she was in love with a male. The actor further called it a "unique situation."

Kirti went on to say that she did move from one point to another, and in that moment she realised no amount of preparation could prepare her for it. The actor had to rewire herself to go beyond the concept of gender, and that is when she realised it was not about whether the person in front of her was a man or a woman, but about the feeling, about what she was feeling for the person.

The Uri actor further revealed that the co-director of Human, Mozez Singh, was probably the most nervous about the kissing scene. While all she could think was, "What if I kiss her and feel something, what if I get turned on?" Kirti also said that she would have had to take a step back and consider whether she was also looking at women. 

The actor revealed they hadn't practised, and the director required them to do 8–10 takes to get different angles of the kiss. Kirti narrated that they did it the first time, and they were like, "OK," and she was relieved because there was no feeling. Then Mozez returned and asked them for more takes.

Kirti quipped that they went at it like robots after the first couple of takes. She explained that sex, or kissing on-screen, attracts people's curiosity, but it is the most boring thing. The actor revealed that there were 100 people around and no privacy. The actor is at the mercy of the director's command to "action-cut, action-cut." She also said that they don't have time to be emotional.

Interestingly, after shooting the kiss sequence, Shefali told Kirti that she had lost her onscreen virginity to her, as she had never kissed onscreen before.
