Malayalam adventure comedy film Valatty - Tale of Tails, written and directed by Devan Jayakumar, is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from today (November 7). It’s a story about dogs, featuring voices of actors Roshan Mathew, Soubin Shahir and Sunny Wayne, among others.

Over the years, Malayalam cinema has offered several heartwarming stories focused on four-legged characters, and Valatty is the latest film to add to the list. There are numerous movies that have featured animals, ranging from dogs to elephants, in prominent roles. These films have effectively portrayed the special bond between humans and animals in a delightful manner.

1. Gajakesariyogam (1990)

The Mukesh-Innocent starrer revolves around an elephant. Helmed by PG Viswambharan, Gajakesariyogam explores a series of events in which the main character (Innocent) attempts to purchase an elephant, leading to another set of problems. Throughout the movie, the elephant plays the central role. The owner’s humorous attempts to learn Hindi to communicate with the elephant, the mischievous actions of the elephant that result in the protagonist being wrongly accused and various other incidents all contribute to providing a good laugh to the audience.

2. Ring Master (2014)

Directed by Raffi, starring Dileep and Keerthy Suresh, Ring Master is about a dog and his master. The film begins and ends with the pet dog. In the movie, Dileep’s character, a dog trainer, faces an awkward situation when his pet dog Diana acts in a film alongside his ex-lover, an actress who shares the same name as the dog.

3. C.I.D. Moosa (2003)

C.I.D. Moosa is a cult comedy film directed by Johny Antony. In the movie, actor Dileep has portrayed one of the most beautiful relationships between a German shepherd and a private detective, whose luck and wit help him to solve cases, along with his fun-filled team. The movie explores the heartwarming yet humorous bond between Sahadevan and his pet dog, Arjun, making it one of the most loved pets in Malayalam cinema.

4. Palthu Janwar (2022)

This Basil Joseph-starrer explores a heartwarming relationship between humans and domestic animals. Directed by Sangeeth P Rajan, the comedy film revolves around Basil, who is an animator by profession, and is forced to take up a government job as a veterinary inspector. Palthu Janwar also features other notable actors like Indrans, Johny Antony, Dileesh Pothan and Shammy Thilakan.
