The OTT streaming of Vishal Furia's mythological horror thriller Maa has begun today, August 22, 2025, on Netflix. The Kajol-starring film, which is set in the same universe as the 2024 thriller Shaitaan, will be released in theatres on June 27, 2025.

Continuation of the Shaitaan universe

The film continues the fantastical world established in Shaitaan and stars Kajol as the titular character alongside Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and young actor Kherin Sharma. After her husband, Shubankar (Indraneil Sengupta), unexpectedly dies, Ambika (Kajol), the protagonist, must confront an ancient demon.

After his father passes away, Shubankar travels to his ancestral home in the village of Chandrapur, which is set in Kolkata. An enigmatic supernatural occurrence connected to a haunted tree close to the family home brings a sudden end to his life. After he passes away, Ambika and her daughter Shweta (Kherin Sharma) go back to Chandrapur, but they find the town's young females have been going missing after they get their period. The disappearance of Shweta further fuels Ambika's resolve to find out what happened.

Legend of Aamsaja and Ambika’s transformation

Human sacrifices and Kali Puja rites are said to be the source of the evil entity Aamsaja's abilities, which are interwoven into the story. In order to save her daughter and the other girls who went missing, Kajol's character goes through a spiritual metamorphosis, embodying the fury of Goddess Kali. Ronit Roy plays the village's spectre. Ambika faces the curse in a dramatic confrontation in the conclusion.

Midway through the credits, we get a reference to Shaitaan and its ties; it features an appearance by Vanraj, played by R. Madhavan in the previous film, which could mean that the franchise is continuing.
