It's official! Mari Selvaraj's latest political thriller Maamannan is all set to drop on OTT on July 27. The film's official digital partner, Netflix made the announcement on its social media handle today, along with the caption, "VADIVELU, UDHAYANIDHI, FAHADH, KEERTHY, MARI SELVARAJ AND AR RAHMAN TOGETHER!! We’re seeing stars Maamannan, coming to Netflix on the 27th of July! (sic)." The film will stream in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
The engaging political drama, which hit screens on June 29, opened to positive reviews from critics and audience alike. Vadivelu plays Maamannan, an MLA from an oppressed community, who stands up against caste discrimination meted out against him after his son Athiveeran (Udhayanidhi Stalin) urges him not to compromise on self-respect. This makes the caste-fanatic politician Rathnavelu (Fahadh Faasil) upset and soon the two are up in arms against each other.
The film is being lauded for its open and bold social commentary on how even political parties that have social justice as their core ideology, too, are marred by casteism in the party. Director Pa Ranjith, who had watched the film, had urged Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development in the Tamil Nadu government to look into the caste bias in his own party. Udhayandhi responded saying that caste discrimination must be eradicated from all political parties and added that "the DMK government, when in power, has consistently protected social justice through various laws and programs."

Maamannan marks Udhayanidhi's last outing as an actor and the actor stated that he was glad to be part of a film like this. Maamannan has music by AR Rahman and the song Raasa Kannu sung by Vadivelu, has been lauded as Vadivelu's best song as a singer. Many had even recommended the National Award for the actor. Maamannan is also said to be a great comeback for the ace comedian, who had taken a hiatus from films for a while.
