Maareesan, the 2025 Tamil film featuring actors Vadivelu and Fahadh Faasil, will stream on Netflix from August 22. The film, which marks the second collaboration of the actors, after their social drama Maamannan, is directed by Sudheesh Sankar, and will be available in multiple languages to stream. For those who have not watched the film in theatres, it might come off as surprising to know what kind of a film Maareesan is, given the trailer and posters have not revealed the true plot of the film. But if you are into dramas with a twist, then Maareesan is for you.

Maareesan is essentially about two men, played by Vadivelu and Fahadh Faasil. While the latter plays Daya, a petty thief who is on a constant lookout for his next victim, the veteran comedian plays Velayudham Pillai, a man who is seemingly lost in thoughts and memory and claims to be an Alzheimer’s patient. When newly released Daya ends up in Velayudham Pillai’s house for a robbery stint, the latter promises him a fortune in return of freeing from his handcuffs tied to the window.
For most parts, Maareesan plays the drama between the two men, as we see Daya’s thieving skills coming to the fore and how he coaxes Velayudham to take a lift from him, with his agenda being to learn his ATM pin and steal his money. But it is only further deep into the film we get to know the old man has ambitions of his own and they are deadly. A string of murders taking place, Velayudham’s lurking behaviour and some secret phone calls, are not enough to make you guess the final twist, but as the second half unravels the two men’s journey come to an ominous point. And it is neither a road-trip drama nor a conman story you had expected. Which is the precise reason you should watch the film, for it makes genre blending film by combining two storylines to give you a twist that you did not expect coming.

Without spoiling for those who have not yet watched the film, Maareesan talks about a relevant social issue which has been done to death in many films. Without delving into the visuals of it, and through a flashback that introduces the backstory of one of the characters, Maareesan makes up for an intriguing watch. If you are someone who likes slow-burn thrillers, then this Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu film could be your on your weekend watchlist.
