After being available for rent for a few weeks on Prime Video, ZEE5, and BookMyShow Stream, Madame Web is gearing up for its full-fledged OTT release on Netflix. Yes, the Marvel superhero film will drop on the OTT giant in the second week of May 2024, i.e., May 16. Netflix dropped a subtle announcement on their website, which means subscribers can easily access the film without paying any extra cost.
Madame Web deviates from the usual genre by detailing the singular backstory of one of Marvel's most mysterious characters. Dakota Johnson plays the role of Cassandra Webb, a paramedic working in Manhattan who gains the ability to look into the future and understands she may use this knowledge to alter it in this suspenseful thriller. As she faces the ghosts of her past, she befriends three young ladies who, barring a terrible turn of events in the present, are destined for great things.
SJ Clarkson directed the film, and Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, and SJ Clarkson crafted the screenplay, which was based on a story by Kerem Sanga alongside Sazama and Sharpless. Lorenzo di Bonaventura produced the film, with Adam Merims, SJ Clarkson, and Claire Parker serving as executive producers.

Joining Dakota Johnson in the cast are Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, Celeste O'Connor as Mattie Franklin, Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, Mike Epps as O'Neil, Emma Roberts as Mary Parker, and Adam Scott as Ben Parker.
The film only managed to earn $100 million globally, despite having a $80 million production budget, due to the negative reviews it received.
Sony allegedly scrapped plans for Madame Web to launch a new franchise after the movie bombed at the box office and with critics. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony was prepared to experiment with their superhero films like Madame Web, which steered outside of the usual clichés in the genre. However, the studio was also looking for "home runs," and executives at Sony were reportedly in a "gloomy" mood following the film's weak box office and critical reception.
Dakota Johnson did not think she would make another superhero film after starring in Madame Web, since she did not make sense in that world. The film's reception did not surprise her.
