Rukmini Vasanth, who found wide-spread fame and recognition with her 2023 film Sapta Sagaradaache Ello, which came out in two parts, is currently promoting her second Tamil film, Madharaasi, in which she is paired with Sivakarthikeyan. The AR Murugadoss directorial is her sophomore project in Kollywood, after Ace, opposite Vijay Sethupathi, failed to create waves. Rukmini: Sapta Sagaradaache Ello gave me a second lease of life in cinema

In a recent conversation with Galatta Tamil, the actress was asked about audience’s love for her character, Priya in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello, and if it was time for them to move on and see her as, say, Madharaasi’s Malathy. “I don’t think I will ever get to the point where I am done with Sapta Sagaradaache Ello and say I am ready to talk about another film. The film is very special in my career, because it gave me a second lease of life in cinema. I’d debuted in 2019 (with Birbal: Finding Vajramuni), after which, this was the film that gave me another opportunity. In fact, at that point, I didn’t know if I would get another chance, or if I had to look out for another career. Then, I got this opportunity that so many people have loved,” she said.

Rukmini added that she appreciates the importance the character, Priya, was given in the film and how much of an impact it had on audiences across age groups. She was also all praise for the structure in the writing of the character, that took her from playing lover, to wife and mother, which made it easy for her to understand her motivations and present Priya onscreen.

As for her role in Madharaasi, Rukmini said that she found it easy to approach emotionally-charged sequences. “That’s a comfort zone, if there are emotions and dialogues, because I am a theatre artiste. So, I know how to approach it, like, where to give a pause in my lines, or say them a little faster,” she said, adding that song-and-dance is more difficult for her, because it becomes very evident to audiences if an actor is not enjoying his/her self while performing. “If there’s even the slightest hint of tension on your face, audiences will feel it,” she said.
