The trailer of Huma Qureshi’s Maharani, which is reportedly based on former Bihar CM Rabri Devi, was released online on May 9 and promises a powerful performance from its lead actor.
The SonyLIV series, which will release on May 28, has Huma and Sohum Shah in lead roles.
The trailer starts by comparing Bihar politics with chess and focuses on issues of casteism and violence, with guns and lathis leading the charge. It also reveals how a CM’s wife unexpectedly has to take the lead after her husband’s illness.
Talking about the series with India Today, Huma said, “It’s not often that you get to portray a character that lets you explore so many layers as a performer. Rani Bharti has been a delight to play. She starts off as someone whom we all know and relate to, but what she goes onto become is someone few of us can aspire for.”
Huma, who began her career with the blockbuster Gangs Of Wasseypur opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui, is noted for her roles in films such as Ek Thi Daayan, Dedh Ishqiya, and Badlapur. Huma also played the lead in Netflix’s Leila that was adapted from Prayaag Akbar’s eponymous novel and revolves around the fictional world of Aryavarta.
The Badlapur actress has three projects lined up including Zack Snyder’s American zombie heist film Army of the Dead, the Tamil action-thriller film Valimai opposite Ajith and Bell Bottom with Akshay Kumar.
