Mahavatar Narsimha, the first of many mahavatar animated films planned by writer-director Ashwin Kumar is headed to OTT after a very successful 50-day theatrical run. The film had released in theatres on July 25 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. The Hindi version, of course, was a runaway hit, while Telugu and Kannada also did fairly good business, taking it to a worldwide net of around Rs 325 crore and making it one of the biggest successes of 2025.
Mahavatar Narsimha headed to Netflix
Since early August itself there were rumours that an OTT deal had ben struck, following the film’s stupendous box office performance, but the makers had shot down all such speculation. The confirmation has come today and it is not on the platform that was earlier rumoured. Mahavatar Narsimha has been picked up by Netflix and the film will begin streaming on the platform on September 19 from 12.30 pm (IST). It will be available in all 5 languages.

Mahavatar Narsimha is the first in a 7 film mahavatar franchise that Ashwin has planned. The filmmaker had said that he chose to begin with the fourth avatar as the story could be told in long format, unlike, say Matsya and Kurma, which he believes cannot be mounted in such fashion. Up next, he will bring the tale of Mahavatar Parshuram to theatres, likely sometime in 2027. Unlike the making of Mahavatar Narsimha, which took Ashwin 5 years because it was a home production, the success of the film has now given him the funds to expedite the work on the next edition.
The filmmaker will, however, stick to the animation format as it gives him a better playing field, and is hopeful of giving audiences a world-class cinematic experience with each film in the franchise.
