Guntur Kaaram, the highly anticipated upcoming family entertainer that stars Mahesh Babu in the lead role, is set to get a Makar Sankranthi release. The movie, which is helmed by hitmaker Trivikram Srinivas has been garnering attention the audiences with its highly promising trailer which was released yesterday (January 7, 2024). However, the cine-goers, especially the Malayalam cinema audiences, are now wondering if Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram has a connection with the 2005-released Mammootty starrer, Rajamanikyam.

Is Guntur Kaaram an adaptation of Rajamanikyam?

From the Guntur Kaaram trailer which is now winning the internet, it is evident that the film’s protagonist Ramana, played by Mahesh Babu, has a strained relationship with his mother Vasundhara (Ramya Krishnan). At the beginning of the trailer, it is shown that Vasundhara left Ramana at a young age, and he grew up as an orphan. At present, she has another family and children and has no contact with her elder son. However, the mother-son duo meet once again, after a series of incidents.

Well, this is in fact, the core theme of Rajamanikyam, the 2005-released Mammootty starrer which emerged as a massive blockbuster. The titular character Rajamanikyam’s mother Muthulakshmi leaves him a few years after his father’s death, as she gets married to businessman Raja Rathnam Pillai. When he goes to his stepfather’s house in search of his mother, she refuses to acknowledge him as her son. However, Pillai finds out the truth and takes good care of his stepson. The protagonist, however, refuses to return to his mother until a tragedy happens.

The netizens, who feel that the mother-son track of Guntur Kaaram is adapted from Rajamanikyam, are now busy discussing the same, on social media platforms. However, they point out that apart from this core theme, everything about the film’s treatment and most importantly, its characterizations look totally different. However, we will have to wait till the release of the Mahesh Babu starrer, to know if there are any similarities between the Telugu commercial potboiler and Mammootty’s 2005-released film.
