After a short theatrical run, director Sethu’s Maheshum Marutiyum is all set for its OTT release ahead of Easter. The movie, which is also scripted by Sethu, has Asif Ali, Mamta Mohandas, Maniyanpilla Raju and G Chandhunadh in pivotal roles.

Apart from the actors, the film’s USP is that it has a Maruti 800 in a pivotal role. The makers had sought out a model of the car from the first-ever production batch and renovated it ahead of the pandemic for the movie.

What is Maheshum Marutiyum about?

The film is essentially a love triangle between Asif’s character Mahesh, Mamta’s character Gauri and the former’s car – a Maruti 800. The vehicle, which was purchased by Mahesh’s father and handed over to him by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, holds a sentimental value for the titular protagonist. But as times become hard, he has to make a choice between holding on to what is dear to him and letting go and moving on. How Mahesh navigates these choices and the role that Gauri plays in prompting his decisions form the plot of the simple, feel-good entertainer.

Maheshum Marutiyum also showcases the history of the Maruti 800 and how the car defined the common man’s dreams. An important arc in the movie is how the company reaches out to Mahesh to acquire the vehicle as part of its legacy – and how he has to make a difficult choice.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Mamta also said that what drew her to the character was the “history of Maruti 800 and the role it plays in the movie”. Incidentally, Kalyani Priyadarshan was the first choice of the makers to play the part of Gauri.

The film is set to drop on Amazon Prime Video on April 7. Other OTT releases on the same day include Pranaya Vilasam on ZEE5 and Romancham on Disney+ Hotstar.
