The 2013 romantic drama Googly was among the early hits in Kannada cinema’s Rocking Star Yash’s career. Pavan Wadeyar’s second film ever, Googly paired Yash with Kriti Kharbanda in a tale of love, heartbreak and reconciliation. Produced by Jayanna Combines, the banner that backed several of his early films, Googly had a successful run at the box office. Buoyed by the response to film, Pavan had said that he was keen to consider a sequel, but as the years passed by and Yash grew in his superstar stature, that dream became increasingly unlikely to release.

Googly, though, is still fondly remembered for its refreshing story-telling, colourful visual presentation (thanks to S Vaidy’s masterful cinematography), the adorable pairing of Yash and Kriti, and, most importantly, the music by Joshua Sridhar. In fact, it was Yash’s stylish character as Sharath in Googly that impressed KGF maker Prashant Neel and gave him the confidence that he’d found the actor to play Rocky Bhai. “Yash had done a very bubbly love story called Googly. That was the first time I’d seen him and I knew there was this rising star. I became a fan of his when I watched the film. Later, when I narrated a scene from KGF to the producer, he asked me which actor could do the role and I mentioned Yash, even though he looked nothing like Rocky then. But I knew that he could pull it off because he had that attitude in him. I wanted an actor who could have a magnetic presence about him,” Prashant has been quoted as saying in an interview.

Well, the film that impressed Prashant and led to Yash becoming the pan-Indian superstar he is today, is back in select movie halls in Bengaluru as a Valentine’s Day special. PVR Cinemas at Nexus Mall Koramanagala and Orion Mall Rajajinagar have one show each of the romantic drama. If you’d like to see it on the big screen, head to either of the multiplexes. The film’s Hindi dubbed version is available to stream on Zee5, but it’s always better to watch the original.
