Much like the rest of the Malayalam film industry, the team of Unni Mukundan’s upcoming movie Meppadiyan too are keenly looking at the response Mohanlal’s Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham will receive after it opens in theatres in Kerala.
The Priyadarshan directoral is currently set for an August mid release, but with theatres yet to reopen in Kerala, the makers are not sure if the date will be postponed again. Vipin Kumar, who is the manager of Unni Mukundan Films, told 10G Media that the makers of Meppadiyan have currently planned to release the movie right after Marakkar hits theatres in Kerala.
Meppadiyan, which has a runtime of just over two hours, has already got a ‘U’ censor certificate and is ready for release. But if reopening of theatres in that state are further delayed, then they would decide to opt for a direct-to-OTT release, said Vipin.
Meanwhile, Unni Mukundan in an earlier interview with us had said that the film is a family entertainer. “I was so involved in the script that to look the part, I had to gain 20 kilos. It’s got a good cast and has me playing a rural character. It will be the next big film in my career,” he said. “Anybody who knows my past and where I come from, will know that it’s a big achievement to produce a movie. It’s heartening for me too, when I look back at these 10 years. I never got a launch or was part of a group. It was a trial-and-error career and to make it this far and create a film is inspiring.”
Meppadiyan also has Indrans, Anju Kurian, Aju Varghese and Saiju Kurup in pivotal roles. Unni and Meppadiyan director Vishnu will also be teaming up for a political thriller titled Pappa.
