Mohanlal joined hands with acclaimed director Lijo Jose Pellissery for his recent outing, Malaikottai Vaaliban. The movie, which is a period fantasy drama, has opened to highly polarising opinions. While cinema lovers have been heaping praise on the film for its layered storytelling and performances, the common audience is extremely disappointed with its slow pace and feels that the narrative falls flat.

As expected, Malaikottai Vaaliban made a massive opening at the box office on Day 1 with a worldwide collection of Rs. 12.2 crore. However, the Mohanlal starrer has reportedly witnessed a massive dip on its second day in theatres, owing to the mixed reviews.

Malaikottai Vaaliban witnesses a major dip on Day 2

The recent updates suggest that Malaikottai Vaaliban has witnessed a major dip in its box office collection on Day 2. As per the reports, the Mohanlal starrer experienced a major drop of over 50 percent on its second day of release and has made around Rs. 6 crore at the worldwide box office. The box office performance of the period film is clearly impacted by the mixed responses from common audiences. Even though its second day of release was a public holiday (Republic Day 2024), this didn’t move in favour of the magnum opus. The detailed Day 2 box office collection breakdown is expected to be out soon.

Malaikottai Vaaliban Day 1 collection report

As per the reports by the South Indian Box Office Twitter handle, Malaikottai Vaaliban has emerged as the seventh all-time biggest Day 1 opener in Malayalam cinema. The Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial made a massive collection of Rs. 12.2 crore. Reportedly, the period fantasy film made a total collection of Rs. 5.85 crore from the Kerala box office alone. The movie made Rs. 5.5 crore from the overseas centres, while it collected around Rs. 0.85 crore from the Rest of India’s box office on its release day.

What is next?

If things proceed at the same rate, Malaikottai Vaaliban might end up as an average grosser at the box office, considering its massive scale and budget. However, the cast and crew members of the film and the Mohanlal fans are hopeful that things might change on Saturday and Sunday, as the perception towards the film has been changing to a more positive side.
