Lijo Jose Pellissery’s big-budget Mohanlal film Malaikottai Vaaliban is prepping for its date with audiences. The film is headed to theatres on January 25, 2024 in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi, the first glimpse of which was revealed a little while ago. Lijo’s teaser was a teaser in the truest sense, giving audiences a sneak peek at the leading man, Mohanlal, as the title character, mouthing a line that is meant to give them a hint at what’s in store. In the 1 minute 30 second trailer, Lijo gives viewers a good but quick glance at Mohanlal only after the 50 second mark, which barely lasts a few seconds.

Fans, of course, were more than thrilled with what they saw, praising the visuals and background score, and Mohanlal’s voice modulation. but the mood on social media was that most viewers were expecting a tad more. Comments ranged from “Teaser did not have much impact; trailer should give a better idea”, to, “This is like Odiyan 2. Odiyan’s teaser had nothing and so does this”, “It’s more like a motion poster”, “Not very different from the first look, but the dialogue is enough proof that it will be a typical LJP film”, “A pakka lijo style teaser... Not much revealing...”, among others.

The good thing about Lijo’s teaser, though, is that he gave his viewers a glimpse of the leading man, a luxury that, say, Prabhas fans did not get when they woke up early to catch the 5.12 am teaser of Salaar Ceasefire, or, for that matter, those who waited patiently to see the teaser of Kannada actor-filmmaker Upendra’s return to direction UI. Upendra had an on-ground event at a theatre in Bengaluru and then proceeded to show the audience a blank screen with audio only.
