Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan’s latest film Malikappuram will get more release centres across the world this week. The movie, which has already emerged as this year’s first Malayalam hit, raking in over Rs 14 crore from worldwide box office since its Kerala release on December 30.

The movie is now set to release in the UK in 10 centres. The UK is among one of the more prominent revenue centres for Malayalam movies after GCC, USA and Australia. The film, which is set to release in the UK on January 13, in theatres in Birmingham, Leicester, Feltham, Ilford, Luton, O2, South Ruislip, Wandsworth, Liverpool and Manchester Trafford.

The film has already made about Rs 4 crore from GCC countries after it released in theatres in the Middle East last week. Its Kerala box office revenue stands at Rs 10 crore as on Monday, and this is expected to climb further, given that there’s no Malayalam release this weekend due to Vijay’s Varisu and Ajith’s Thunivu hitting theatres.

Malikappuram revolves around an eight-year-old girl named Kalyani, who has had to endure a personal tragedy, and seeks solace in Lord Ayyappa. She decides to go on the Sabarimala pilgrimage with just her classmate for company. However, a stranger turns up to protect them on their journey and fulfill their wish to go to the Sabarimala temple.

Apart from Unni, the movie also has Ramesh Pisharody, Renji Panicker, TG Ravi, Abhilash Pillai, Sreejith Ravi and Manoj K Jayan as part of the cast. Devanandha and Sripad essay the characters of two children, who drive the plot of the film that has Sampath Raj as the antagonist.

The Telugu version of Malikappuram, which will be distributed in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by Allu Aravind’s Geetha Arts, is all gearing up to release on January 20. The movie, which is directed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar, will also be getting a Tamil version.
