Naresh, who started his career as a child actor and made a name for himself as a lead actor for his comedies and evolved as a character artiste over the years, headlined and produced this weekend’s release Malli Pelli. MS Raju has written and directed the relationship drama which features Pavitra Lokesh, Vanitha Vijaykumar in key roles.

The film, based on the series of controversial incidents leading to the marriage of Naresh and Pavitra Lokesh, hogged the limelight for the provocative statements surrounding real-life personalities in the promos. Arul Dev and Suresh Bobbili scored the music for the drama which had cinematography by Bal Reddy and was edited by Junaid Siddique.

Malli Pelli was among many releases that hit screens this week and simultaneously dubbed in Kannada too. Reports suggest the film has collected around Rs 40 lakhs at the box office. Trade pundits believe the start isn’t bad for a film with barely any strong crowd-pulling factors. However, it needs to witness immense turnaround to put up a respectable total in the long run.

While the drama managed to draw eyeballs for its controversies, Superstar Krishna’s fans aren’t happy with how Naresh has squeezed in needless references to Krishna and Vijaya Nirmala in the film. Many opined the actor has made the film purely to settle scores with his ex-wife Ramya Raghupathi, portraying her in a negative light. The scenes where Naresh kicks his wife with a leg have left a bitter aftertaste among viewers.

This is Sarath Babu’s last release as an actor. Jayasudha, Madhoo, Roshan and Ananya Nagalla essay other important roles in Malli Pelli. The film was produced under Vijaya Krishna Movies, a banner founded by Vijaya Nirmala that enjoys a 5o-year legacy in Telugu cinema. Naresh had another release this month - Nandini Reddy’s Anni Manchi Sakunamule.
