Mamata Shankar’s comment on sari draping style among women has created an uproad on social media. Now veteran actress-tun-politician Roopa Ganguly reacted to the incident. She extended her support to Mamata Shankar and slammed social media influencer Rakhi Mitra, who is known to be a supporter of Roopa’s party, BJP.

In a recent interview, Mamata Shankar commented on the style of sari wearing among young women. She stated that wearing a sari but not modestly draping the pallu shows bad taste. Moreover, she compared such sari draping to that of sex workers. “I am sorry that I am mentioning this. But those who drape sari immodestly are, forgive me for saying this, like those who stand in the street under the lampposts (sex workers). However, for them, it is not wrong because they were doing it for their livelihood. I have respect for them. But women these days wear saris like them and then if someone says something, they get offended. Women are disrespecting women. Why should a man respect such women anyway?” she asked.

Mamata Shankar’s statement was brutally criticised on social media. Women from different walks of life ‘schooled’ her about freedom of choice and respect. Amid this criticism, Roopa came on social media live and stood by Mamata Shankar. This was when she slammed Rakhi Mitra.

Without stating Rakhi Mitra’s comment, Roopa said, “Mamata Shankar did not establish herself with the help of BJP. How does an uncivilised, uneducated, and imbecile woman criticise Mamata Shankar? She (Rakhi) cannot even match the level of Mamata Shan’s feet. She will need forever to get there. Momodi (Mamata Shankar) became globally acclaimed not because of NJP but for her own self. Rakhi Mitra is talking rubbish.”

Roopa further said that in West Bengal, making Reels is people’s livelihood. “How far will that take you? It is because of the imbeciles like you (Rakhi), that the state is suffering. How dare she say anything about Mamata Shankar? All of these things are being done for monetisation. How many people have the right to talk about Mamata Shankar? These bad people take shelter under political parties,” said Roopa Ganguly.
