Mammootty’s first release of 2023, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, is gearing up to hit screens in Kerala. The film has already got a good buzz, following its world premiere at the International Film Festival of Kerala in December 2022.
The movie, which is helmed by Angamaly Diairies and Jallikattu filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, was shot in a village in Palani, Tamil Nadu and revolves around a bunch of Malayali theatre artistes who stop for rest on their way back from Velankanni.
The team had also released the Tamil poster of the movie. However, the film will not be getting a dubbed version in Tamil and the megastar in a recent interview revealed the reason. “This is a Tamil film for Malayalis and a Malayalam film for Tamilians,” said Mammootty.
The actor essays the role of drama artiste James who suddenly begins to exhibit erratic behaviour as his troupe nears a village. Soon, they find out that his ‘new’ personality is that of Sundaram, a villager who had gone missing a few years ago from the place.
The movie has Ashokan, Ramya Pandian and Poo Ram in pivotal supporting roles along with a host of Tamil artistes. “In fact, about 50% of the actors are from Tamil Nadu in the film,” said the actor, revealing that the people from the village they had shot were also part of the movie.
On conversing in Tamil in the movie that was shot in sync-sound, Mammootty said that the language used in the movie had a certain dialect. Director Ram, who had worked with the megastar in Peranbu, had helped out in correcting those dialogues to ensure authenticity.
Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam will hit theatres in Tamil Nadu on January 20 – a day after its Kerala release. The movie, which is scripted by S Hareesh, is also produced by Mammootty under his banner Mammootty Kampany.
