Mammootty’s Kannur Squad to cover two real-life cases in this particular timeline, here’s all we know about the film

With the release of Mammootty’s Kannur Squad nearing, the team has now been vocal about what to expect from the film , which is helmed by Roby Varghese Raj and is set to hit theatres worldwide on September 28.

For the uninitiated, the movie is inspired by a team of police officers who are part of Kannur Squad, which was formed by the former Kannur SP S Sreejith. While the original squad, which is still operational, has a total of nine members, the movie will focus only on four police officers – essayed by Mammootty, Rony David Raj, Shabareesh Varma and Azeez Nedumangad. While Mammotty’s character George Martin is an assistant sub inspector, the other three play a driver and two police constables.

Is Kannur Squad based on a true story?

While the film is based on the Kannur Squad, it is also a fictional take on two of the cases handled by the team. In a few recent promotional interviews, Mammootty had said that the movie revolves around a case that the Kannur SP in the film who is played by Vijayaraghavan, asks the team to take up even though it falls under Kasargode SP’s jurisdiction.

Kannur Squad covers events that happen between 2007 and 2013 in real life, but has been truncated within the scope of the film that focuses majorly on two cases, said Mammootty in an interview with The Cue.

Meanwhile, the film’s writers Rony and Muhammed Shafi had first contacted the officers of Kannur Squad in 2018. Their inputs were used for the film, which revolves around a lot of true events that had transpired, Mammootty added.

Reasons to watch Kannur Squad

Since the pandemic, Mammootty’s selection of films have been exceptional with the actor being part of movies such as Bheeshmaparvam, Rorschach and Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam ; the latter two was also backed by Mammootty Kampany, which is also producing Kannur Squad.

Mammootty also said in a recent interview that Kannur Squad is a thrilling crime drama that promises to keep the audiences at the edge of their seats. The brilliant cast of the film, which also includes Kannada actor Kishore and composer Sushin Shyam, make it a highly-anticipated watch in theatres.
