Former Mamta Kulkarni recently made headlines after she took sanyas during the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 by joining the Kinnar Akhara. Several videos and pictures from the ceremony surfaced on social media. Soon after, the organization recently removed her from the position of Mahamandaleshwar. Amid the ongoing episode, Mamta Kulkarni recently opened up about her controversial semi-nude photoshoot in the 90s. She also spoke about her dance number, Koi Jaye To Le Aaye from Ghatak.

Mamta Kulkarni on her controversial photoshoot

In a recent interview with Aap Ki Adalat, Mamta recalled featuring on a magazine cover without perceiving it as obscene, as she was in 9th standard at the time. She said, "I was shown a picture of Demi Moore by the Stardust people, which I did not find to be obscene. I also gave this statement at the time that, ‘I am still a virgin’ and people couldn’t digest that because according to them, people do anything to enter Bollywood. People might do that and they might enter Bollywood for money but it wasn’t the case with me. My father was a transport commissioner for 35 years. Since I did not know anything about sex, I didn’t know what was nudity about. If you are not sexually conscious, you won’t relate nudity to obscenity."

Further, reacting to the bold lyrics of the songs that she performed on, she cited Madhuri Dixit's name as an example and said that as dancers they don't hear the lyrics. Their sole focus is on the dance step.

In the same interview, she revealed why she agreed to be a part of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi's song Koi Jaye To Le Aaye from Ghatak. She said that she returned from a world tour with Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan before shooting the song. The former actress added, "The director Raj Kumar Santoshi requested me to do it. The movie was lying canned for seven years because of its heroine Meenakshi Seshadri, who got married and the film wasn’t getting buyers. I went through my dance number as if I was doing a stage show, in which I was good at."
