There is no Jailer without Varman – that is what Superstar Rajinikanth had said about Malayalam actor Vinayakan’s performance in the hit film during the success meet. Vinayakan was the main antagonist in the film, and had received widespread appreciation for his slightly exaggerated, but fear-inducing outing as Varman, the big baddie who gets rid of his adversaries by dunking them in big drums of highly corrosive acid. At the end of the film, Varman meets a similar end at the hands of Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth), from which, the assumption is that there will be no coming back.

Jailer 2: Flashback or is Varman not dead?

But if actor Vinayakan is to be believed, he will be seen in director Nelson’s upcoming Jailer 2. The actor, who is currently promoting his next release, the much-awaited Mammootty starrer Kalamkaval, in which he plays a cop on the trail of the Malayalam superstar, has confirmed that he is in the Rajinikanth film. The obvious question is, how would that be possible? Whether or not it is a flashback or if Varman has miraculously escaped will have to be seen when the film releases in June 2026. As the saying goes, if you don’t see a body, never assume that someone’s actually died in a film.

Jailer 2 will also have returning cast members like Ramya Krishnan, Shivarajkumar and Mohanlal, while the new additions include Nandamuri Balakrishna, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Mithun Chakraborthy. The film has been announced as a June 12 theatrical release.

Kalamkaval, directed by Jithin K Jose, is a home production for Mammootty, for whom it is the first release since his recent health scare. In theatres on December 5, 2025, the film is rumoured to be based on the infamous serial killer Cyanide Mohan, although the team has dispelled this. In a recent promotional video, though, Mammootty said that cyanide is an integral part of the narrative. For Vinayakan, the bigger challenge was to underplay his character, given that he is often required to be loud and exaggerated in his onscreen mannerisms. Jithin had asked Vinayakan to cut all of that out, which, the actor said, was quite challenging.
