The 2000s can be described as the most unremarkable decade in Malayalam cinema. A slew of over-the-top films with problematic themes passed for flag bearers of the industry. But then there were a few films that bucked this trend such as Kazcha, Thanmatra, and the 2003 Sathyan Anthikad film Manassinakkare.

For several reasons, Manassinakkare is a memorable film – from the performances, the heartwarming story, and the melodious compositions by Ilaiyaraaja. But its most celebrated aspect is the fact that it was pivotal to the careers of two iconic actresses – Sheela and Nayanthara. One of Malayalam film’s most iconic leading ladies, Sheela, returned to the silver screen after a 22-year hiatus with Manassinakkare. An actress of significant stature in the industry, Sheela holds the Guinness Record, along with Prem Nazir, for appearing together on screen for 130 films. There is even a scene in Manassinakkare where lead star Jayaram subtly references Prem Nazir and Sheela’s undeniable chemistry. Manassinakkare was also the feature film debut of one of South Indian film’s most revered actresses, Nayanthara.

The film tells the story of an elderly woman who is forced by her children to lead a more restrained life, which is appropriate for her age. But she refuses to be held back and is determined to live life on her own terms. She encounters a sensible young man who offers to help her with her predicament, which as one would expect, is met with children’s disapproval.

The film’s understated humour, which is ingrained in its thought-provoking themes such as elitism and ageism, makes for a compelling watch. It also stars Siddique, Innocent, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, Sukumari, Mammukoya, and Nedumudi Venu in supporting roles.

Well that's the Lost and found episode for today on OTTplay, until the next time it's your host Nikhil signing out.
