The makers have announced that the film had the biggest opening for Tamil cinema worldwide

It looks like Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan has got one of the biggest openings for any Tamil cinema. The film, which is jointly bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, today announced that the film made a whopping Rs 80 crore on the opening day. Taking to their social media handle, the makers announced, "Thank you for giving #PS1 the biggest ever opening day for Tamil cinema worldwide! #PonniyinSelvan1 #ManiRatnam @arrahman @MadrasTalkies_ @LycaProductions @tipsoffical @tipsmusicsouth (sic)."
Ponniyin Selvan has opened to positive reviews worldwide and movie halls are packed over the opening weekend with heavy footfalls from the family audience of all age groups. The reason for the same is said to be the adaptation of one of the most celebrated works of Tamil literature, which is very close to every Tamil-speaking person's heart. Moreover, a number of attempts have been made over the years to make the film adaptation, right from the days of Makkal Thilagam MG Ramachandran. This apart, the film also boasts a stellar star cast and a brilliant team of technicians. All these factors have given the film a huge fillip.
The star cast includes Vikram as Aditha Karikalan, Trisha as Kundavari, Jayam Ravi as Arulmozhi Varman, Karthi as Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandini. The film also has an ensemble supporting cast including Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Jayasudha, Rahman, Shobita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Vikram Prabhu, Ashwin Kakumanu to name a few. Music is by AR Rahman, cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by Sreekar Prasad and art direction by Thota Tharrani. The film, which hit screens on September 30 released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. The movie is an adaptation of Kalki's five-part novel of the same name which was penned during the 1950s. The film opened to packed theatres across the world.
