Written by Neeraj Pandey, Ghooskhor Pandat is among the big releases on the streaming giant that were announced nearly a week ago. The upcoming crime thriller grabbed attention for its teaser and title. However, the promotional materials were deleted later after the title row escalated into legal proceedings and FIRs. In light of recent events, Ghooskhor Pandat is set to change the title of the movie. Here’s more about the legal battle of Manoj Bajpayee’s new film.
Manoj Bajpayee and Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming cop film Ghooskhor Pandat will no longer be holding its controversial title. After facing some legal arguments and pleas, the makers have decided to change the title. For the unversed, Ghooskhor Pandat faced a petition to hold its release in the Delhi High Court as the petitioner claimed that the movie might disrupt social harmony because of its defamatory title against a community that associates the “Pandits” with corruption or bribery (translated to Ghooskhor).
On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court of India granted some relief to the team of Ghooskhor Pandat after it rejected the plea against the film to hold or ban its release. The makers assured the court that they would revise the title and also shared that the teaser and promo material had been removed or deleted from social media.
Netflix’s upcoming original film Ghooskhor Pandat centers around a corrupt cop named Ajay Dixit, also referred to as Pandat. Things take a turn when he finds an injured woman and gets unwittingly sucked into a larger conspiracy that changes his life.
How Ghooskhor Pandat got involved in a row?
Ghooskhor Pandat has been facing flak and wrath from people and various organizations, including some government intervention due to its controversial title. After a petition on its stay, it faced some FIRs against it as it threatened to disturb communal harmony in the nation.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) also urged the makers to revise the title a few days ago, as it objected to its derogatory title. “FWICE and all its affiliated associations strongly object to the use of this title, as it appears to single out and target a particular community and its traditional means of livelihood in a derogatory and offensive manner," the FWICE, which represents 36 affiliated associations and scores of members comprising workers, technicians, and artists of the media and entertainment industry, and the authorities said in a letter to Netflix and other popular OTT platforms.
