Malayalam actor Alencier Ley Lopez is currently facing criticism from all corners due to his recent misogynistic remark at the 2023 Kerala State Film Awards ceremony. After R Bindhu, the state’s Higher Education Minister, described his comment as a reflection of male chauvinism, many film personalities have come forward to raise their voices against it.

Recently, producer and screenplay writer Manoj Ramsingh took to Facebook (now Meta) to state that he believes Alencier deserves a slap for his comments at the award function. He also said that if he had been present at the event, he would have slapped Alencier for making such disrespectful comments on women. Manoj advised the Appan actor to follow in the footsteps of actor Kunchacko Boban, who shared the same award with Alencier. The writer also told Alencier to seek mental counselling while reminding him that physical strength and good health are not exclusive attributes of men.

Earlier, Malayalam dubbing artist Bhagyalakshmi and actor Santhosh Keezhattoor also criticised Alencier for his recent remarks. Bhagyalakshmi described Alencier as a misogynist and sexist who has no respect for women. She also stated that the actor should not have attended the prestigious event if he was not interested in awards.

Alencier’s sexist remark that landed him in controversy

Alencier received the ‘Special Jury Award’ at the Kerala State Awards ceremony for his performance in Appan, directed by Maju. In the movie, he played the character of Itti - a womaniser, toxic parent and cheater, who is hated by all the people in the region. However, during his acceptance speech, Alencier said that he was not interested in receiving a ‘female figurine’ as an award and instead requested a ‘male figurine’.

The actor said that he should not be tempted by giving female figurines as awards. According to Alencier, the Kerala Chief Minister is an epitome of masculine strength and suggested that the awards should reflect masculinity. He further stated that he would quit acting on the day he receives a male figurine memento for his performance.
