Unni Mukundan’s Marco literally painted the town red with its bloody action and gore, which is in sharp contrast to what Malayalam films are known for. The beastly violence of this magnitude has never been portrayed on the big screen before, giving Marco the tag of the most violent Malayalam film ever. Despite the blood-curdling scenes, the A-rated film was a runaway hit at the box office. So why do people like watching violence on screen so much? Marco’s Unni Mukundan points out that violence is very much part of our real life and society and the movie does not even show 10 per cent of what happens in society.

Marco is all set to make its OTT debut on SonyLiv this Valentine’s Day after a successful run at the theatres. During an interview with Baradwaj Rangan of Galatta Plus ahead of the Malayalam film’s much-awaited OTT premiere, the new action superstar spoke about violence and the action genre as a whole.

“It (Violence)is part of real life. If you follow the news, the violence that happens in society and not even 10 per cent of it is shown in the movie,” he remarked.

While pointing out that it's the basic instinct of human nature, the actor said that even science has taught us it is about the survival of the fittest.

However, the Marco star was also quick to clarify that these explanations are not sell the idea of showing violence on screen, and that ‘it is a harsh reality’.

While reiterating that violence is in and around society, the actor said that he is thankful that he is not personally witnessing it. “Just because we don’t see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist,” he added.

He further explained that action as a genre is the most commercial and action heroes from south have done well, “It is primarily because of the subject, and secondly, it is the violence, and people kind of enjoy that thing,” he said.
