Things seem to have taken a rather drastic turn for Jonathan Majors who is currently under arrest on suspicion of assault and charges of misdemeanours. The 33-year-old actor was arrested on March 25, 2023 on charges that stemmed from a dispute with a 30-year-old woman who, according to the New York City Police, “sustained minor injuries to her head and neck”. Although Majors has denied all allegations and claimed complete innocence, he was arraigned in a New York City court on multiple charges including assault and aggravated harassment.
Since then, the very promising actor who was sought as the next big star in the making, has found himself in the thick of all the media scrutiny. As a result of the scathing publicity, Jonathan Majors has been dropped from a slew of projects that includes (as per Deadline) the screen adaptation of the Walter Mosley novel, "The Man in the Basement", and the unannounced Otis Redding biopic. The domestic violence allegations, reportedly, have also caused his manager, Entertainment 360, and publicist, The Lede Company, to cut ties with him.
But the bigger blow is still yet to occur, claim popular Hollywood sites, as Majors’ future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) now stands in full jeopardy. The Creed III actor debuted as part of the MCU as “He Who Remains” in season 1 of the TV series Loki and soon starred as Kang the Conqueror and the character’s myriad variants in the 2023 film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Majors is, or was, being steadily mounted as the chief villain of the upcoming MCU phases with the 2025 film Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and 2026 film Avengers: Secret Wars firmly centred on his character.
He is also set to reprise his role as Victor Timely in season 2 of Loki, which will arrive on digital platforms in mid-2023.
And now, following the assault charges and the subsequent arrest, speculations are rife that the Marvel Studios would be keen on replacing Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. In fact, Hollywood insiders have already claimed that the studio is already ‘prepared’ to replace Majors and one of the current and most-favoured casting options is Damson Idris. Marvel Insider Jeff Sneider alluded to this in his recent episode of the Hot Mic podcast and claimed that should the studios be looking at finding a new for the Kang the Conqueror role, Damson Idris “type of actor” would be one of the frontrunners.
The internet, too, is fully immersed in the ongoing conversation and has suggested names like John Boyega, John David Washington and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
UK actor Damson Idris, 31, is known for his roles in films like Astral and Outside the Wire and TV appearances on shows like The Twilight Zone, Black Mirror and Snowfall. He recently landed a starring role in the Brad Pitt-led Formula 1 movie that Joseph Kosinski of Top Gun: Maverick fame.
