Here’s some good news for all Marvel fans! A new film, What If?, is slated to premiere in August, according to Entertainment Weekly's Summer 2021 TV Preview, making it the first animated series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The series is based on the 1977 comic book series of the same name. It highlights the stories set in a parallel reality where familiar aspects of the Marvel Universe have been altered. For instance, in some of the stories in What If? Black Panther replaces Peter Quill as the space pirate Star-Lord; and a world where Earth's Mightiest Heroes have turned into zombies.
Stories like that of "What If...Magik had been Doctor Strange's apprentice?" puts a slight spin on existing comics consistency. The thought itself is sure to produce intriguing results.
It has been verified that the very first story will depict what might have happened if Peggy Carter, instead of Steve Rogers, had taken the Super Soldier serum, and what would have happened if Loki, instead of Thor, had wielded Mjolnir. Trollhunters famed actor A.C. Bradley will be the showrunner, while Bryan Andrews, who has been a storyboard artist on various Marvel films, takes on the director’s chair. Jeffrey Wright makes his MCU debut as the voice of Uatu/The Watcher.
The TV series seems to be following the lead of the comic book. The late Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Neal McDonough, Sebastian Stan Toby Jones, Josh Brolin, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Jeff Goldblum, are among the MCU veterans lending their voices to the show.
