Officially, Christopher Nolan's much-awaited movie, The Odyssey, has its first look revealed by Universal Pictures. In his third partnership with Nolan following Interstellar and Oppenheimer, Matt Damon plays Odysseus in the new film. The movie is scheduled to open in theatres on July 17, 2026.
The Odyssey will film Homer's ancient Greek poetry for the next-generation on a wide screen. Following Odysseus, as he sets off on a dangerous trip home following the Trojan War under Nolan, the adaptation looks to be a visually spectacular and narratively riveting one.
Under their Syncopy banner, Nolan, who also wrote the script, is filming alongside Emma Thomas, his wife. A long-time partner with the director, Universal, has called The Odyssey a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. This marks the first time IMAX film screens will show Homer's basic story.
Leading Matt Damon as Odysseus, the movie features an outstanding cast overall. Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo will be joining him. Although specifics regarding their particular parts are still unknown, the quality of the cast excites viewers about the release of the movie.
Holland and Zendaya, who will also reprise their roles in a future Spider-Man, embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey in The Odyssey. Anne Hathaway was recently seen in The Idea of You on Prime Video, while Pattinson is getting ready to return as Bruce Wayne in The Batman sequel.
Starting this spring, principal photography for The Odyssey is scheduled to take place at several foreign sites. Parts of the film will be shot in Sicily, including on the island of Favignana, said to be one of the locations that inspired Homer's original story.
Following the great popularity of Oppenheimer, the entertainment industry and fans have eagerly anticipated Christopher Nolan's next project. The director's past of strong summer releases—including Inception and The Dark Knight Rises—allows the choice to premiere The Odyssey in mid-July.
The Odyssey is looking to be among the most awaited movies of 2026 with its renowned source material, innovative visuals, and all-star ensemble. Soon audiences all across will see why Nolan picked Damon to guide this outstanding adventure.
