However, when they were ready to explore their love, Gyeom disappeared without informing anything to Mubee, and that left Mubee angry and thought Gyeom was dead. Years later, they met in a Q&A session. Did they end up on a happy note? Read on...
Melo Movie centers around two couples - one is Choi Woo-shik's Ko Gyeom and Park Bo-young's Kim Mubee, and the other is Lee Jun-young's Hong Si-jun and Jeon So-nee's Son Ju-ah. Gyeom and Mubee are aspiring film critics and filmmakers respectively, and Si-jun and Ju-ah are aspiring singer-songwriters and scriptwriters.
Each of them possesses a bitter past in their lives. Gyeom who wanted to be a good film critic, lost his parents at a young age and his brother, Ko Jun (Kim Jae-wook) was the only hope in his life. Mubee who was tired of her father being obsessed with his work related to movies, lost him too and she ended up being a filmmaker because she wanted to make a 'Melo' movie like his father. Meanwhile, Si-jun lived in a different apartment with his girlfriend Ju-ah. Ju-ah broke up with him after 7 years of being together which left Si-jun confused and heartbroken.
After sharing their first kiss, Gyeom disappeared and left Mubee confused and angry. As the episodes progressed, we were shown that Gyeom's brother, Jun, had an accident that sent him into a coma that harmed his body badly and that was the reason Gyeom could not contact Mubee. Years later, they again met during a Q&A session after the screening of a Mubee-directed film (her debut project). In the meanwhile, Gyeom was an aspiring film critic and was quite popular among young audiences. In the twist of the tale, Gyeom and Jun shifted to a new house and became the neighbors of Mubee.
Their love gradually began to grow. But the death of Gyeom's brother put him into a deep depression. He realized that his brother sacrificed everything to take care of his little brother and did not fulfill his desires. At times when Jun was alive, Gyeom also realized that Jun never had the will to live but lived because of his little brother.
Gyeom who was going through the depression, found the companies of Mubee, Si-jun, Woo Jeong-hu, and others. Gyeom who watched almost all movies since his childhood, sold the CDs of movies that he accumulated all these years. Meanwhile, Mubee who was directing a movie, Melody, based on the real-life love story of Si-jun and Ju-ah, faced a budget issue and the project was almost going to be shelved. However, it was revived with the help of the filmmaker under which Gyeom and Mubee used to work. Notably, the screenwriting of Melody was done by Ju-ah and Si-jun produced the music. When the movie was released, the songs overshadowed the plot and Si-jun became a known name. However, Si-jun and Ju-ah had a heartbreaking ending to their relationship as they decided not to patch up.
Meanwhile, Gyeom decided to live his life to the fullest and quit being a film critic. He applied for a job at a travel agency at the end. He expressed his desire to be fully employed and thus it marks a significant change in his character in the movie. On the other hand, Mubee turned out to be a successful director.
Melo Movie ended with a heartwarming scene where Gyeom visited Mubee on a film set. As they playfully discussed the script, Gyeom refused to return the script to Mubee which led them to create a romantic scene. They shared laughter and a heartfelt kiss. This ending highlights the characters' growth, power of love, and connection while highlighting the phrase 'life isn't a movie but a reality.'
Melo Movie ending also hints at a possible season 2. What will ultimately happen to the future of Choi Woo-shik's Ko Gyeom? As we saw Gyeom's interview for the travel agency did not end well as the interviewers tore his resume without him noticing. Will Gyeom return to being a film critic or find another job while living a loveful life with Mubee? For this, Melo Movie indeed needs a season 2.
