Writer Padmabhushan makers, Lahari Films and Chai Bisket Films, came together to introduce a YouTuber to Telugu cinema, Sumanth Prabhas with their latest production Mem Famous. He’s the actor, director and the writer of the rural entertainer, which released in theatres this Friday. The film, which was widely promoted by the leading celebs of the tinsel town prior to release, opened to mixed responses from critics.

Several premier shows were organised for Mem Famous a day before release in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and most of them ran to packed crowds. The makers opted for a limited release - 300 screens - for the film. While a section of crowds found the film predictable, there was unanimous praise for Sumanth Prabhas’ execution. The word of mouth has translated into good responses at the box office as well.

The film has collected over Rs 1.10 crore on day one, quite a credible feat in a weekend that had over half-a-dozen theatrical releases - Malli Pelli, Men Too, 2018 being the most prominent among them. The timing of Mem Famous was certainly apt for the summer season - the story is apt to draw family crowds and youngsters in good numbers. The dialogues, music and the performances are the major highlights of Mem Famous.

The story revolves around Mahesh, Balakrishna and Durga, inseparable yet aimless friends who notoriously find ways to get in trouble for petty issues. Before the situation spirals out of control, the trio decides to take charge of their life and set up tents in their village for a living. However, an unfortunate mishap wreaks havoc on their ambitions. To what length will they go to settle their debts?

“Mem Famous merits a theatrical viewing for its carefree, happy-go-lucky vibe - the dialogues, although marred by sync sound issues, are sparkling. The bonhomie between the lead characters, their innocence and the freshness in the performances keep you invested in the proceedings,” OTTplay’s review read. Mani Aegurla, Mourya Chowdary, Saarya, Siri Raasi ,Kiran Macha, Anji Mama, Narendra Ravi, Muralidhar Goud, Shiva Nandan also essayed key roles in it.

To boost its theatrical revenues, the makers are organising a special free screening at a prominent single screen in Hyderabad today. Will the smart move pay off?
