Mindy Kaling dishes out details about her Hollywood film with Priyanka Chopra Jonas

It was announced quite some time back that Priyanka Chopra, Jonas, and Mindy Kaling were collaborating professionally for the first time on a film based on the big fat Indian wedding. However, the film created by the makers of Crazy Rich Asians is yet to go on floors, but people have been awaiting it for a very long time.

During an interaction with Forbes, Kaling spoke about the representation of South Asians in Hollywood and shared details about working with Priyanka in a movie. The actor-filmmaker said that they are quite proud of the fact that they include South Asian Americans who are descended from Southern India in their show, and a Muslim Indian girl is displayed in their next. 

They can see how they differ culturally from one another. The culture of Asia is not uniform, and if there aren't any shows that investigate and explain this difference, why would people necessarily know that? 

Kaling went on to say that Priyanka is a Punjabi Indian from India and she is an Indian American Bengali girl from the East Coast, and they are starring in a movie together. Because of how different they are, their chemistry together is so enjoyable.

It's also being reported that both the actors will be playing cousins in the forthcoming film.

The magazine asked Kaling if she still believes that people are taken aback by her confidence as she develops these powerful Asian female characters to dispel the myth that Asian women are reserved.

She said that at this point, it probably isn't all that surprising if anyone knows anything about her. It has been a terrific experience to write about Asian women who defy the stereotype that Asian women are modest, don't get angry, seek relationships and sex, are ambitious, and are also seriously flawed.

When Kaling writes about Asian-American experiences, it's interesting because she had a pretty traditional mom who wanted her to get A's and become a doctor, but she also tries to show other aspects of the Asian American experience that one may not have seen before, such as commitment to mental health, seeing a therapist, and wanting to date a guy.
