Mithya, the feature film directorial debut of Sumanth Bhat, who’d earlier directed segments of the Kannada anthology series Ekam, had a very successful festival run, starting with its debut at MAMI in Mumbai in 2023. More than a year and half of traversing the globe later, the film, produced by Ulidavaru Kandanthe maker, actor-filmmaker Rakshit Shetty’s Paramvah Studios, was brought to theatres in March this year.
Mithya opened to great reviews, but with the festival film tag hanging over it, it failed to gather momentum at the box office, with reports suggesting that it could muster all of Rs 17 lakh net from theatres. The positive response, though, has ensured that the film gets to be on OTT, with Amazon Prime Video set to host it. As of April 18, Mithya will be available to stream on the platform. It becomes the 9thfilm only from 70-odd that released in the first three months of 2025 to make it to OTT.
TITLE | Mithya |
DIRECTOR | Sumanth Bhat |
CAST | Athish Shetty, Prakash Thuminad, Roopa Varkady |
STREAMING PLATFORM | Amazon Prime Video |
STREAMING DATE | April 18, 2025 |
Mithya stars Athish Shetty in the lead, as the title character, Mithun, who is fondly called Mithya by his friends and family. Mithya, who lived with his parents and young sister Vandana, is torn away from all things familiar when he loses his father and mother in quick succession and is then the subject of a custody battle between the families on both sides.
In Udupi, which is all but alien to the Mumbai-bred Mithya, the boy struggles with his new surroundings, the possibility of foul play in his father’s death and the realization that trouble began brewing between his parents only after his sister came along. That’s quite a lot for a young mind to grapple with, which is what is at the crux of Sumanth’s film. The story, according to the filmmaker, was inspired by a real incident that Sumanth witnessed.
Mithya also stars Prakash Thuminad and Roopa Varkady in pivotal roles, while Midhun Mukundan fills in as music director. The film is among the last few that Rakshit has produced for his gang of Seven Odds writers, which included films like Avane Srimannarayana , Bachelor Party and Ibbani Tabbida Ileyali, among others.
