Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s 2025 list of films has a new addition. Moments ago, Mohanlal took to social media to announce that he would star in actor-filmmaker Anoop Menon’s next directorial, an as-yet-untitled film that, he says, is ‘close’ to his heart. To be produced by Timeless Movies, the film, the superstar wrote, will be a dramatic journey traversing love, longing and music, and will be shot extensively in Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata and Shillong. The film, he reckons, will be an epic journey.

This is Mohanlal’s second collaboration with Anoop Menon, having starred in the 2008 film Pakal Nashatrangal, that the latter had written. Directed by Rajeev Nath, the critically acclaimed film, which also starred Suresh Gopi, Murali, Kalpana, Anoop and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, among others, had got Mohanlal a few best actor awards.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal, who was last seen in his directorial debut Barroz, which tanked at the box office, is gearing up for the release of the second instalment in the Lucifer trilogy, L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film, which has a massive ensemble cast, is set for release on March 27, 2025.

His upcoming filmography includes Thudarum (directed by Tharun Moorthy), Hridayapoorvam (Sathyan Anthikad), Vrushabha (Nandakishore), AJFC_MMMN (Mahesh Narayanan) and a pivotal role in Vishnu Manchu’s Kannappa. A third Drishyam instalment is also in the works with director Jeethu Joseph, as well as a film with Jithu Madhavan.

Empuraan, which is a joint venture between Ashirvaad Cinemas and Lyca Productions, is set for a massive pan-India release, with a 700-screen outing in Kerala alone. The film is being dubbed in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi as well and comes out on the sixth anniversary of the original, Lucifer. At the film’s teaser launch in January, Prithviraj had spoken about Mohanlal’s unwavering support being the major driving force in ensuring that he was able to plan Lucifer as a trilogy.
