That there would be comparisons between Mohanlal’s blockbuster Lucifer and Chiranjeevi’s Telugu remake was evident right from the start. The latter’s team had also stated that they wanted to come out with a film that respected the Telugu audience’s sensibilities and there were several rewrites to make it seem as different from the original Malayalam movie, which was helmed by Prithviraj Sukumaran.

While Godfather has an envious cast featuring megastar Chiranjeevi, Salman Khan and Nayanthara, the teaser and trailer of the film has had a lot of Malayalam fans take a dig at the big budget Telugu movie for being a “lesser version” of the original.

In fact, as soon as the trailer of the Telugu movie dropped on Wednesday, several Mollywood fans had shared snapshots from the Malayalam film comparing it with shots from Godfather, which is directed by Tamil filmmaker Mohan Raja.

The action scenes, especially Mohanlal’s trademark kick, which was used in Lucifer as a tribute to Spadikam, as well as the VFX were those that were heavily criticized. These sequences were also some of the highlights from Prithviraj’s film, which was made on a budget that was just quarter of what the Telugu movie that is set to hit theatres on October 5, had.

Here’s a look at some of the tweets about the two movies as well as the two superstars, who play the role of a political leader, with a mysterious past, who is thrust to spearhead his party after the death of a mentor.

Chiranjeevi fans, however, didn't back down either, as they shared snippets of the megastar's iconic dance numbers and asked if Mohanlal could emulate any of that with equal flexibility and grace.

Incidentally, Mohanlal and Prithviraj are all set to begin work on the second instalment of Lucifer titled Empuraan next year. The movie, which will also be scripted by Murali Gopy, is touted to be made on a massive budget and will be shot in several other countries. Both Mohanlal and Prithviraj had stated that the movie won’t be a continuation of Lucifer’s story but will explore more about Mohanlal’s character Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’ram.
