Mohanlal's birthday on May 21, 2025, turned out to be a gala event for Lalettan fans as several key announcements were made to mark the Lucifer star’s birthday. Two of the big announcements were not limited to the Malayalam industry. The makers of the upcoming Telugu film Kannappa and Mohanlal’s pan-India venture Vrushabha dropped glimpses and first-look posters. But despite the hype surrounding Mohanlal’s involvement, these two updates drew mixed reactions from fans, who are not ready to settle for anything less after Lalettan’s stellar performance in Thurdarum.
The team of Kannappa, starring Vishnu Manchu, offered a special glimpse of Mohanlal as Kirata from the Telugu film. Later in the day, Mohanlal unveiled the first look of Vrushabha. Though several fans were excited to see the updates, a section of the netizens did not seem to be impressed. Positive comments below the Vrushabha post read 'epic first look' , 'poster looks like historical films' and 'Glad to see Mohanlal doing a warrior role'.
However, one fan urged Mohanlal to 'Do realistic movies like Dhrisyam and Thudarum only'. There were more comments such as ‘Please stop doing fantasy movies. It doesn’t work for you’ and “Please stop these worst VFX movies..act in our own normal Lal yettan roles..”.
One person even termed Mohanlal’s script selection is 'pathetic' after 2000. Probably referring to his recent Thudarum success, one fan commented 'One step forward, two steps back.'
There were also comparisons between Kannappa video and Vrushabha first-look, with some finding the Telugu glimpse underwhelming.
Nanda Kishore directs Vrushabha, which is touted to be a period action drama and will have Mohanlal in the lead role along with Shanaya Kapoor, Mahendra Rajput, Ramachandra Raju, Ragini and Neha Saxena. Vrushabha is set to release on October 16, 2025.
On the other hand, the Telugu film Kannappa stars Vishnu Manchu in the lead role. The film, directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, will have special appearances by Mohanlal, Baahubali actor Prabhas, Akshay Kumar and Kajal Aggarwal.
Mohanlal's last release was Thudarum, which impressed both critics and audiences with his stellar performance. Director Tharun Moorthy was also hailed for bringing back the vintage Mohanlal back on screen
