Director Priyadarshan’s much-anticipated period drama, Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, released in theatres today to housefull shows across the State. The advance reservations for the film and the response for its fans shows would add confidence to the makers’ decision to release it in theatres first instead of OTTs.

However, those awaiting to watch the Mohanlal-starrer in the comfort of their homes wouldn’t have to wait long, according to its producer Antony Perumbavoor, who said in a recent interview that the movie will release on an OTT platform in less than 50 days of its release.

Currently, the stipulation by Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce is that a Malayalam movie that releases in theatres can be shown on digital platforms only after 41 days. They seemed to have relaxed the rule for Marakkar, considering the budget at which the movie has been made.

The makers of the film have sold the digital rights to Amazon Prime Video, which had also released Mohanlal’s Drishyam 2 earlier this year. The movie could hit the streaming platform by the end of the year or early January.

Mohanlal had also confirmed that two of his upcoming movies – Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Bro Daddy and Jeethu Joseph’s 12th Man – were made for OTTs and will be releasing directly on streaming platforms. Antony, who has also produced these films, said that they will take a call on whether to release Alone and Monster on OTTs after gauging the situation of theatres.

The superstar’s next theatrical release will be B Unnikrishnan’s ‘mass’ entertainer Aaraattu, which is scheduled to hit cinema halls on February 10, 2022.
