Mohanlal promises support after Shwetha Menon succeeds him as AMMA president: ‘Irrespective of men or women..’

The election to select the next committee for the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) was one of the most keenly followed events in Malayalam cinema recently, that saw Shwetha Menon becoming its first woman president. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, who is a former AMMA president, recently spoke about the film body elections, promising support while also stating that it is not about whether men or women get to head the association.

The recently held AMMA election saw actress Shwetha Menon becoming the first president of the Malayalam film association. In a recent interview with News 18, former AMMA president Mohanlal that it is a good organisation, which does a lot of good things that are not known publicly. "The association stands for the 560-odd members. Let new members come to the posts. It is not about men or women. Irrespective of men or women (in the posts), we all can support them and move forward," remarked the actor, adding that one need not go to the office every day for that.

The AMMA elections were necessitated after the Mohanlal-led executive committee resigned en masse last year. The team was forced to take such a drastic step after the state-appointed Hema Committee submitted a report, exposing the instances of sexual abuse and pay parity within the Malayalam film industry. The problems faced by women were highlighted in the report and there was a clamour for a woman to head the organisation.

And Shwetha Menon became the first woman to head AMMA, by defeating actor Devan. The rest of the key posts are also led by women, with Kuku Parameswaran elected as the general secretary, Lakshmi Priya as vice-president, and Ansiba Hassan as joint secretary.
