Mohanlal reveals the crucial element needed for a successful movie: 'There is no magic...'

Mohanlal's fans and Malayalis hailed his Dadasaheb Phalke Award win, while taking pride over his talent and contribution to Indian film. In an interview with DD India, the actor discussed the important factor that is required in a successful film. 

'There is no magic for a perfect film'

When asked what components contribute to a film's success, the Malayalam superstar said that no one knows the secret to making a perfect movie. "Everyone wants to release good movies. However, there may occasionally be a financial collapse even with having all the appealing aspects," he stated. The unpredictable nature of cinema was further highlighted by Mohanlal, who said that despite more than 200 releases annually, only a small number of films turn a profit in box office.

"We need to prepare and concentrate on doing our best. My film, Drishyam, performed well in a number of languages and countries, reaching a wider audience and generating more revenue," he said. Mohanlal noted that for a movie to resonate with viewers, it needs to have a strong emotional component.

Impact of OTT in Malayalam cinema

Mohanlal made it a point to mention during the discussion that the Malayalam cinema industry little-known when he first started in this field. Films gradually garnered some attention as CDs and cassettes became easier to obtain to people. However, he asserted that the rise of OTT during the pandemic situation changed the current state of this industry. According to Mohanlal, these online services made it possible for people to watch our films with subtitles, which led to a newfound level of popularity.

During the conversation, he also conveyed his sincere appreciation for the esteemed recognition he has conferred recently. The Thudarum star also revealed details about his upcoming, much awaited film, Drishyam 3, which is directed by Jeethu Joseph. He has suggested that something would befall on his character, Georgekutty, in the movie, but he has assured his and the film franchise's fans it won't be an awful thing!
